The first reply wins the job: why 60 seconds matters

6 October 2026 · 4 min read

Homeowners ask three installers and book the first one who answers. Here's what a fast reply looks like, and how to send it while you're on a job.

A homeowner who wants a heat pump or a new roof rarely asks just one company. They fill in two or three forms, or ring a few numbers, often in the evening. Whoever answers first gets the conversation, and usually the survey.

Why speed beats price

At the enquiry stage nobody has a price yet. What they have is a question and a little bit of worry. The first reply that sounds human and offers a next step takes that worry away. Replies that arrive the next morning land after the decision has already been made.

What a good first reply says

  • ✓ Their name and what they asked about
  • ✓ Who will call them, and roughly when
  • ✓ A link to pick a survey time, or 'reply with a day that suits'
  • ✓ A way to opt out (it's required, and it builds trust)

Example: “Hi Sarah, thanks for your enquiry about a heat pump. Dan will call you today. Want to pick a time for a free survey? [link] Or just reply with a day that suits.”

How to reply in 60 seconds when you're up a ladder

You can't, not by hand. That's the point of automating the first reply: it goes out in your name the moment the form arrives, day or night, and you pick up the conversation when you're off the roof. The homeowner already feels looked after.
